The Emirates – A Natural History is the most comprehensive reference book on the entire range of wildlife in the United Arab Emirates. Written by 34 experts in their various disciplines, it is illustrated with unique photographs, many of which are by award-winning cameramen. Whether your interest lies in identifying ancient fossils, hiking through mountain wadis, identifying birds in your garden, exploring underground caves, fossicking along the shore, snorkelling in the shallows, SCUBA diving over coral reefs or fishing from a boat, you will find all the information that you need in this title to enhance your pleasure in these activities. If your interests are of a more specific nature, such as studying plant communities, recording insects or investigating the behaviour and ecology of particular species, this book will provide invaluable background information on studies that have taken place to date and what species one is likely to encounter. Much of the work that has been completed on Emirati wildlife has been carried out by enthusiastic amateurs and this book is both a tribute to that effort and also an encouragement for others to make their own contribution. But more than all these things, The Emirates – A Natural History is quite simply a celebration of nature at its best. Who could turn these pages and not be in awe of the incredible beauty and variety of the natural world? Conservation draws its roots and strength from such understanding and appreciation. The real wonder lies, not on these pages, or in these photographs, but in the wild, where nature still finds a home. Long may it remain so!

Fishing forms an important activity in many societies throughout the world today and played a significant role in the life and subsistence of many prehistoric societies. Past archaeological research on fishing has often tended to concentrate on particular sites or chronological periods. This study aims to adopt an inter-disciplinary approach to model regional interactions between coastal communities and their environment. The geographical framework for this study is the Arabian Gulf/Gulf of Oman, with a particular focus on the southern Gulf region and present day coastline of the United Arab Emirates. The environmental and archaeological background to the region is considered first and modern fisheries data, as well as ethnographic data relating to traditional fisheries is presented. An evaluation is carried out of all the archaeological evidence for the adoption of particular fisheries technology. The principal data forming the basis for this study are 23 archaeological fish bone assemblages from sites located throughout the Arabian Gulf/Gulf of Oman. The chronological focus is from the 5th millennium BC to the Late Islamic period. In order to comprehend the regional variation in fisheries, sites were selected on the basis that they represented a variety of site types in different environments scattered throughout the region. This research provides for the first time a detailed insight into the status of past fisheries resources in the region as well as an insight into the fishing strategies utilised by the early coastal inhabitants of the Gulf during the course of the past 7000 years. The work’s special focus is on the use of biometrical techniques to enable size reconstruction of economically important fish groups. The overall aim of this research (the first in a planned series of Abu Dhabi Islands Archaeological Survey Monographs) is to consider the interactions between the goals of the coastal societies, their fishing strategies and environment; the work overall goes some way towards addressing some of the key questions of relevance to the archaeology of south-east Arabia.

A major new book on the archaeology of the UAE has just been published by the Zayed Centre for Heritage and History, part of the Emirates Heritage Club, in association with Trident Press.

Entitled simply Archaeology of the United Arab Emirates, the book contains the collected papers of the 1st International Conference on UAE Archaeology, held in Abu Dhabi in April 2001 under the patronage of Deputy Prime Minister HH Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The book, edited by Professor Dan Potts (University of Sydney), Peter Hellyer and Dr. Hassan Naboodah, Director of the Zayed Centre for History and Heritage, contains nine papers by ADIAS personnel, all of which refer, to some extent at least, to work undertaken by ADIAS over the years.

ADIAS contributors include Beatrice de Cardi (on the evolution of archaeology in the UAE and its future), Elizabeth Shepherd-Popescu (on Dalma and Marawah), Vincent Charpentier (on aspects of flint technology), Heiko Kallweit (on the Late Neolithic period in the U.A.E.), Dr. Robert Carter (on maritime trade patterns in the Bronze Age, including possible way stations on islands like Ghagha, Sir Bani Yas, Marawah and Balghelam, Dr. Joe Elders, (on the pre-islamic Christian monastery on Sir Bani Yas), Dr. Geoffrey King and Peter Hellyer (on sites in the Abu Dhabi desert), Dan Hull (on the sulphur mines at Jebel Dhanna) and Dr. Mark Beech (on the development of fishing, using data from Dalma, Marawah, Balghelam and other island sites).

The study of the archaeology of the United Arab Emirates began only in the late 1950s, a century later than in some of the other countries bordering the Arabian Gulf. Until then, it was believed, wrongly, that this southern Gulf country, comprised largely of arid deserts and mountains, had played only a peripheral role in human development in the Middle East. Over the last four decades, however, investigations of the country’s ancient heritage have shown that although there are no great cities or massive monuments under the sands, the land now making up the U.A.E., including its many offshore islands, has, in fact, played a major part in the emergence of maritime commerce in the region for over 7500 years. From seaborne trade with Mesopotamia in around 5500 BC, by which time the trade in Gulf pearls had already begun, to long-distance commercial links with India and Pakistan by 3000 BC and to an efflorescence of navigation skills that permitted Emirati sailors to reach as far as China 2000 years ago, the U.A.E. has been crucial to the development of Middle Eastern civilisations.

This elegant publication presents the major results of 40 years of archaeological research in a series of papers by leaders in their respective fields. In so doing it provides a fascinating insight into the diverse, but little-known, history and heritage of the region. From the first signs of human occupation, in the Late Stone Age, to the copper-mining industry of the Bronze Age and its international trade links, to the short-lived existence of Christian communities before Islam, and then into the Islamic period with its far-flung commerce, the archaeological evidence of the U.A.E.’s place in the history of the region is clearly documented.

This book was officially launched on the 18th July 2003 at the British Museum during the Seminar for Arabian Studies reception.
